L.A. City Council approves ban on supermarket plastic bags: Los Angeles today became the largest city in the nation to adopt a ban on plastic bags at supermarket checkout lines, handing a major victory to clean-water advocates who sought to reduce the amount of trash clogging landfills, the region’s waterways and the ocean.

Today was the last Saturday academy for the law program that I am in. I can safely say that it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. The amount of knowledge and skills that this program has taught me is priceless. Every time I left a workshop, I was reinvigorated and motivated to go out into the world to make a difference. Once again, I learned a very important lesson today.
Although it is very cliche to say this line, I feel that it is pertinent to everyone. The single most important thing about accomplishing your goals and realizing your dreams is showing up. Many opportunities are missed simply because we are not there. So to the best of my abilities, I will try to show up and be there. I will not let doors close because I did not take the initiative to show up at the door.
All of this may sound awkwardly phrased, but the point I am trying to get at is that you yourself are in control of your future.

The frequent fliers who flew too much: Many years after selling lifetime passes for unlimited first-class travel, American Airlines began scrutinizing the costs — and the customers.

if only if only, with hands clasped and prayed to the sky
i asked the twinkling and streaking lights to give me a sign
with clenched teeth i hollered to the moon
if only if only, with hunched shoulders
i asked the heavens above to bring me my love
with shivering knees i screamed to the gods
if only if only
Before attending college, I had dreams that I would discover myself and find my calling in this life of mine. Today, I realized that I am only a couple of weeks away from completing my second year and it is safe to say that I am more lost than I started off. I am mixed up between ambition and love. As always, they never intermingle. Looking at my work, and myself, I wonder how much of it I did for passion and how much I did for success. Maybe I am in a difficult mind state right now and my mind is forging unnecessary thoughts. Nonetheless, I am feeling very lost. To think that in only two years I would enter the real world is an undertaking I am not ready for. Life, you are a conniving and tricky person.
During the Harvard Public Policy and Leadership Conference I went to in February, a girl I met told me about Onesies. She goes to Macalaster College in Minnesota, and they basically collect all paper that have only been used on one side and that would otherwise go unused. The school then binds the papers into a notebook to sell them at their store and they even make a small profit from it!
I thought this was SUCH an amazing idea that I proposed it as a project to the rest of the USAC Presidential Interns. Then, my director told me about the GreenB Competition at UCLA, which was ABSOLUTELY perfect for my project! If I win, I could actually implement this at UCLA!!!!
